One of the jobs you want forever 2006-06-28 - 2006-08-14

Early one Thursday morning I get a phone call… "What are you doing for the next three months?" With little planned except finding a job and doing Uni work, the friend at the end of the telephone replies "Cool, can you get yourself to Heathrow Airport for Saturday? We need crew". Apparently the last deckhand had got drunk and pushed the skipper down the stairs. A replacement was needed quickly- apart from the impending arrival of the Boss she was making her way to the Monaco Yacht show, via the Perini Navi Cup in Sardinia. Despite no STCW95 (nor any RYA certificates in anything larger than a dinghy), no experience on boats bigger than 40 foot and very little time to pack all I could stammer back was "er, yeah, cool"
Covering nearly 2500 sea miles (and pissing off several other yachties in the process) the trip was truly epic, even if I did treat it as more of a holiday than actual work. But who wouldn’t? Being paid to witness stunning sunsets, drive around in 30kt inboard tenders, drink beer and teach rich kids to swim I was totally convinced my friend had found the perfect job. And I seriously considered not returning for my remaining years of University.
The boat is indescribable in sheer elegance and resources- two tonne tenders are berthed beneath the foredeck, the port quarter contains a hydraulic sea door and the winches register several tonnes when slack. Eight Sky HD boxes output to various screens (the largest of which is 75") and wireless internet is available almost anywhere on the boat and almost anywhere in the world.
